The Los Angeles Sheriff's Department said Friday that 49-year-old Vanessa Marquez died at a hospital following the shooting at her South Pasadena apartment Thursday. Lt. Joe Mendoza says Marquez was having a seizure when South Pasadena officers arrived, and paramedics treated her. He says officers spent an hour trying to talk Marquez into getting additional help when she pointed what turned out to be a BB gun at them. Friend Terence Towles Canote says the actress was having health and financial problems but was hopeful about a career comeback. Marquez played Wendy Goldman, a nurse, in the first few seasons of medical drama "ER" on NBC. She also starred in the 1988 teacher drama "Stand and Deliver" as math student Ana Delgado.

The genius of Jonathan Gold, the restaurant critic for the Los Angeles Times, was that in his restaurant reviews he did so much more than tell you whether the food was good (though he did that exceptionally well; he’s the only food critic to win a Pulitzer Prize). In his reviews, Gold wrote about fine dining but also focused a light on lesser-known parts of LA that often went ignored, telling the city’s story one food-truck taco or boat noodle at a time. Gold died Saturday, July 21. He was 57. Gold was the subject of “City of Gold,” Laura Gabbert’s terrific documentary about the man and his work. I also interviewed him before the film came out. He was a big talker (except when asked whether he enjoyed the film; his answer had nothing to do with the quality of the movie, but his discomfort at being a journalist and the subject of the story). Gold was a great writer who clearly loved his work and his city. I didn’t know him, certainly — we just had the one conversation — but he invited me to have lunch the next time I was in LA. The 85-year-old Caballe died Saturday at a hospital in the Catalan capital where she had been since September. Spain's Emeritus Queen Sofia attended the funeral in the Les Corts district of the Catalan capital. Also present were Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, Catalan regional president Quim Torra and Spanish tenor Jose Carreras. "She was like a big sister to me," Carreras said. The leaders of some of the country's political parties and Barcelona Mayor Ada Colau were also present, as were scores of fans. The government said it planned to pay homage to Caballe with events in Madrid and Barcelona in the near future. Caballe was buried at the Sant Andreu cemetery, next to her parents. Caballe achieved international fame as an opera singer in the mid-1960s. Spanish media said that Caballe entered the hospital last month because of a gall bladder problem. Condolences poured in from the world of opera and Spain's highest authorities. King Felipe VI tweeted that Caballe was "the great lady of opera, legend of universal culture, the best of the best" and that "her personality and unequaled voice will accompany us forever."
